WARNING: CLOSEOUT ISLAND IS A RIP OFF BAIT AND SWITCH SITE! AKA CloseoutIsland

Closeout Genius just changed its name to Closeout Island.  The various sites that they run include SLRIsland, CamcorderIsland, Naviisland and many others.

They are one of the worst bait and switch websites on the Internet, if not the absolute worst.  Read the reviews here.  If you’ve attempted to purchase from them, cancel your credit card and report the transaction to the State of New York’s Attorney General.

Read my prior analysis of them here.  Pay attention to the 73 comments at the bottom.  They have the same address as Big Camera Deals, their other bait and switch website.  See this photo, read my analysis here.  There are a number of families that run the various bait and switch websites in Brooklyn, but CamcorderIsland/Big Camera Deals is run by the absolute bottom feeders. Another site that they operated is Sonic Cameras.   There are actively engaged in fraudulent business activities.

Google really, really needs to remove them from Adwords immediately.

WOW thank you for this post...tried and tried to find something on this website and could not find any information...I was just about to buy a 2600 camera from them...thanks for saving me a hassle!

Yes,Yes, Yes I called about about a canon ti1 because it was half off. I called and talked to sales which sounded exactly like the telephone menu system. I asked him how many cameras they had in stock, and he put me on hold for 5 mins. and forgot to answer my question. He just said to buy it on-line. That's when i Googled your blog.....Thanks for the heads up!

Beware of doing business with Pyxis Camera. Part of my camera order did not arrive in the package. I have called and e-mailed for almost two weeks to get them to send the missing part. Sometimes after arguing with me, they say the part will be mailed and I will receive a confirmation e-mail. However, they did not follow through. I finally got fed up and had my credit card company do a charge back for the value of the missing part.

Brilliant work Dave the daring!

I have been shopping for a Nikon D700 Body/lens. Ironic that there kits are cheaper than a Body only. Someone help me add this up!

As I spoke to them, firstly, they do not acknowledge their name while answering the phone. Always in a big hurry while talking and sounded like a SCAM brewing. We should send them to Nigeria for telephone scam business, may be Somalia so do speak.

Stay away from shopping their websites listed below again! They are not listed on www.BBB.com. Hello!

Go with Amazon and their affiliates. Good luck.

Thank-you for having posts like this on your site. I was thinking about somthing as I was reading their prices, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". Thanks, Craig

All I can say is "THANK YOU", as I was thinking about ordering from CloseoutIsland. But as Craig & my Mother said ...if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is." Also, I wondered too how their "packages" could be such a close price to just a camera body D700.
I started looking for info on them & found this post. Thanks so much for saving me from more than just a headache. Stella

I ordered online a Canon SD780 camera over the Labor Day weekend from CloseoutIsland(COI) and got a call Tuesday from them to confirm that I did make the order. During the call I was also offered to order extra battery and memory card for the camera which were priced at least double the normal one find in stores. I declined the offers and was told the order process is continuing.

Not hearing back from COI as of 9/10/09, I Googled for reviews on COI and found out this site that spelled out all the bad comments against COI.

I called COI today for status of my order and I was told my order is back ordered and they expect the order to come in a week or two. Upon hearing that, I told the guy to cancel my order.

Thanks all for the helpful reviews. I will be more critical of online stores from now on.

Pyxis Camera is not to be trusted. I also did not receive part of my order. E-mails to their customer service were not answered and calls led to them assuring me that the missing item would be sent right away, but nothing ever happened. I too requested my credit card company do a charge back months ago and am still waiting for the final decision. DO NOT SHOP WITH PYXIS!

I purchased over $1000.00 worth of cameras and lenses off closeoutisland.com the other day. After entering my credit card info, I did some research and found that it was just a scam to get credit card info. I called the "company" to see about my purchase and I was transferred a handful of times to different people that sounded shady and unprofessional. When I wouldn't confirm my 3 number verification code on my credit card, they started yelling at me and hung up. I contacted my credit card company directly after that incident and cancelled my credit card and am having to pay a $35 fee for a new card to be shipped overnight. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM CLOSEOUTISLAND.COM. It is a scam and they will not send you anything. Please do not make the same mistake I did.

Thanks for the post. I actually ordered a Canon T1i originally for a package for what I thought was super cheap(it's my first dslr). I got a call 48 hours later recommending me to upgrade by getting a Canon Xsi with an AF Nikon lens for $400-500 more. I said sure over the phone but then realized, I've just been scammed and that now I was getting ready to dish over retail price. I was getting upgraded to a cheaper camera and a generic lens for more money! After researching online and discovering this, I quickly cancelled my CC before the transaction can post. Thank you so much for helping me save money! By the way, he said he was a "Canon Authorized Distributer". Canon distributer my ASS!-- parkr9@unlv.nevada.edu

I was pretty wary after reading these negative responses since I had already placed my order. But I had a very different experience - I was asked to call back to confirm my order. When I gave my order number, I was placed on hold for a couple of minutes and then the customer rep told me that my order was confirmed and would ship out the same day. No bait & switch, no back order :-)
Waiting for my D90 now...

Dave said...

Good luck on that Samir. Please provide an update once you receive it. It'll be interesting to see what arrives.

Ordered a couple weeks ago and paid for overnight but no camera. had the same experience of calling and then being told it would ship the next day. Go leave a sidewiki for them so people will know not to make the same mistake many of us did.

I attempted to order a Nikon D-90 FROM "Rip off Island".
I talked to some Jack Ass named "Rip off Ralph"
He tried to sell me a $150. battery that I could buy anywhere else for $32.00. He also said i needed a "special memory card"for$100.
I toldhim to cancel my order. I am constantly monitoring my credit card since they have the #. If I see any unwarranted charges I will notify the New York attorney general and press criminal charges. People should be aware of these evin people!

i cannot thank you enough for posting this blog ... and to everyone who responded and put up their stories as well, thank you. i was a push of the button away from ordering from them last night and then my stomach lurched a little — having been ripped off myself and usually skeptical of "too good to be true" things, i decided to do a little more digging on the company. i din't have to look far.

i will definitely go with a trusted name.

thanks again.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! These guys have great prices advertised of course as nobody else but you can't buy these items here. They going to tell you that a model you want to buy is Japanese version (a camera is Japanese and you won't be able read in Japanese so you need to get US model for more) or (a Lens is Japanese and is made of plastic so you need to purchase US model for more that a plastic one has too many recalls). Unfortunately they convinced me to buy Sigma lens even I wanted only Canon brand. They put extra letters on the model number so I couldn’t check what I'm really buying and I believed them. Manager Ralph gave me false information that he sending me newest model which isn't on US market yet and I could see it only on Japanese web site but I don’t know read Japanese so actually I can’t see it anywhere . Later on I found out that this model he sent me is nine months on US market and even it’s cheaper elsewhere. I would be fine if I would get grey market product with store warranty, but not from these guys. I called back after few minutes to cancel my order. Manager Ralph said that he can't cancel it that my order was already processed but I can try it for 30 days and if I don't like it he will issue a full refund and also full refund for both shipping charges, that I have his word on it and I can record it on tape if I want. I realized that something is here wrong after I spent two hours on the phone with these guys under huge sale pressure ,listening how great item I'm getting ,ten times better than Canon. After I received the package I didn't open it and I sent it same day back. They refused the package and it came back to my house and my little daughter unfortunately signed it. So I sent it to them again. I called them and I asked for the return label or authorization number but Ralf didn't give it to me. I disputed item with credit card but Ralph said it never going to happen. Now he says that he never told me about 30 days and full refund. Now he wants 15% restocking fees and return policy is now 7days as is written on their web page. FEDEX has package, delivering package, hopefully they won't refuse it again. They are forcing me to keep it, even if I'm happy with my new lens from different store. Today I’m truly disappointed and devastated.

I am having fun with these guys now! first I ordered a lense that of course was put on back order when I did not purchase the accessories or protection plan. Then I called them back and told them that if that lense was on back order then I would like to upgrade to a better lense, one that was in stock. I was quickly told that all the lenses were on back order.
I had my wife call and ask if she could buy a camera body and lenses and how quickly they could be shipped. They told her 24 hrs. I was told it takes 1 week. they said that evrything was in stock and ready to go so she proceeded to pad the order then she quickly changed her mind and said she had found a better deal on the lenses and she just wanted the body. Then they said they had to check the availability of the camers and guess what. It was on back order. She told them that she was just told that they had it and was quickly told to order online.
I called back again and asked if I could order a very expensive lense and if they could get it to me by the weekend and they said yes they could ship today. they told me all lenses were in stock and I told them that's funny you just told me everything was on back order a minute ago... they hung up.

Well well now they won't even accept my phone calls. They must have some sort of call screening setup.

I got the same story for the Can sxi, marked 299 for the sport package, half the price of the lowest anywhere, then I called to double check, knowing I wouldn't get anywhere, and of course they had an order of "100 or more" of the same camera during the time I ordered so they were out of stock....I wanted to screw with them so I asked about a more expensive camera and told them I only had a little money and that it was for my daughters birthday, they said, sorry we don't have anything in that price range. The next day they had the camera marked down to 199! So when they realize youa ren;t going to be sucked in, they dump you. Who has time to run a business in such a shitty manner and by the way, they are closed on the SABBATH, HMMMMM

I ordered a canon sd1200 from closeout island 10 days back and I called them today to find the status of my order. They said the product is not available for shipping till december. Those idiots should have displayed that message while I was ordering the camera. I told them to cancel my order immediately. They were very unprofessional.

Anonymous said...

Just want to thank you guys for all your help. If it looks to good to be true, it usually is. I ordered 2 cameras and then read your reviews - I called the next morning and they tried to sell me the "accident insurance" for "less than half price and throw in an extra battery." I didn't need batteries and wasn't about to get insurance, but asked when I could expect shipment, they told me 2 to 3 months even though they had just told me they were in stock ready to ship. I cancelled the order and called my credit card company to cancel the card for fraud. Thank you so much.

Wow! I was just about to purchase a Canon 5d mark II with lenses for $4,618.00 - Something told me to check to see if there were any complaints against and found at least 50 of them. Thanks to those unfortunate buyers for posting your bad experiences.

Add another thankful consumer to your list. Was bouncing between web pages of SkyPointDigital.com and Closeout Island trying to decide which "business" offered the best package for the canon eos 50D. I called and talked to someone at closeout island to inquire about it being a USA model with the manufacturers warranty....they assured it was indeed. Also told me to place the order online,(THANK YOU!)because at that point I became a little suspicious....Adorama, Calumet, B&H, always take the orders over the phone, and I am very hesitant about having any credit card information stored out there in space. So, then I did a check on closeout island, and thusly found your page. A big "THANK YOU, Dave!"
Think I will pay more for the camera, and do business with the tried and true real business people. Guess I can afford it now that you just saved me roughly $800.00. Thanks again.....Sherry

I should have checked the reviews before dealing with CloseoutIsland. I tried to purchase a Nikon on-line from this company, their on-line order system kept telling me my shipping last name is invalid. I became suspecious and researched for reviews. I am glad I found this review blog. I am going to keep an eye on my credit card for any fraudulent charges.

I made an order on internet; received an email to call them for 'confirmation', which seemed strange, but not as strange as the two people I talked to (first one hung up on me). Credit card was never charged by them, but mysterily, credit card was charged my another internet vendor I've never used (frogster-online.com) seven times. Thanks Suntrust for catching them!

Thanks for these posts. When I saw Closeout Island listing a Nikon D3000 dslr camera for $234, I knew it couldn't be on the level. This is less than half price for a recently released and highly rated entry level Nikon dslr.
Avoid Closeout Island like the plague. Thanks again.

SLR ISLAND IS A BIG SCAM. I ordered a Canon 50d for 259 bucks 2 months ago. I got two phone calls from them the couple days after I ordered asking me to buy batteries and memory cards. I said no thanks, just send me what I ordered. Still haven't received my order. I won't either. Capitol One canceled my card last week. A couple abnormal charges went through, luckily, they caught it early and I'm not out anything. Kudos to Capitol One. Coincidence? I doubt it, but, regardless, my camera never came. They had no intention of selling it for that price either. IF IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.....IT'S NOT. SLR ISLAND IS NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF RUDE CROOKS. DO YOUR BUSINESS WITH A REPUTABLE STORE. I've bought from Abe's of Main, One Call, Adomrama and B and H. Not one problem with any of them.

CloseoutIsland may be scammers. I ordered two Cannon HF200 for 379.00. I gave the cc information. I later received a email telling me to call them to confirm. They wanted to upgrade my order by selling me batteries for 200. each.
I said no thanks just the camereas.
Mysteriously a couple days later I receieved a call from Sears.com Security asking me if I placed an order for an $1100 TV...No... Somebody used my credit card.... I wonder who now that I found these comments. Meanwhile I was wonder where my camera order was? I called today and they said that it was out of stock until the 2nd or 3rd week of January.... I have confimred that the Credit Card I gave to them was the one that was comprimised...and now canceled the order. IT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. I got off lucky.

I was about to order a few camera kits (D90s) but I thought it was all too good to be true. I called the 1 800 number and eventually spoke with a sales rep. I asked whether or not the products were new and came with a US warranty and he indicated they do. I was excited so I told him I would just order online and he said great. A big red flag came up: How can this company sell quality cameras less expensive than Amazon and eBay? Then I did a google search on this SLR Island conpany and possible complaints and TA DAHHHHHHH, it is all a scam. I just wish folks realize YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Sandy said...

I am glad that I read this post before I place my order. I was about to order a Canon 5DMarkII for only $1299. I called in to check if it is a brand new camera or refurnished. The sales rep told me that it is a wholesale price, i have to buy 50 pcs of 5dmarkii to get that price?!? They never stay anything on their website, and there is no return policy. I am not sure if this website is reliable or not... just watch out!

Anonymous said...

I agree with you 100%. They are complely fraudulent. I recently purchased a Canon camcorder and they tricked me with the same deal. The rep told me that the camera only comes with a 15 minute battery and that he would sell me a 4 hour battery for a sale price of $129. Since I was buying online I thought that it would be wise to get some warranty with the camera as well, in case i got a lemon. That was $200 dollars. the camcorder itself was inexpensive at $384. Well with that I was looking at approximately: $384 + $129 + 200= $713 x 1.09= 777.17 then he said something about shipping insurance at 8% but he would give me a deal of 6% so $777.17 x 1.06=823.80. I was charged $839. ( I was told that I could get a full refund if I changed my mind.) Well I did change my mind after I did the math and found out that they were also charging me shipping insurance on the warranty, which if in their system needs no security. I tried to cancel the next morning. That was when I was told that it would be charged 8% of the total 15% of the total which came to $125. I was told that if I tried to cancel my credit card that I would still be charged and also pay my bank for cancelling. I was told that I got a good deal.

The package came i didn't open it because I wanted to send it back. I called and talked toa so called manager. he tried to console my fears that I had I good deal and all. So I was like well at least I didnt have to pay $1000 which is the original price plus I have some bonuses. So I got home today and I opened my package. To my horror, there was no rapid charger, 4 hour battery, warranty, or anything that was promised. The way that I know this is because I called Canon to confirm the battery life. The official Canon rep told me that I had the standard package and that the battery has a charge of only 70-80 mins. To addd insult to injury, I was told that there is no such thing as a rapid charger that they make. The standard is 200mins and the other is only 170mins to charge. Not what I call "rapid'. PLEASE WHATEVER YOU DO.......DONT SPEND YOUR MONEY WITH WWW.CLOSEOUTISLAND.COM!!!! They are a bunch of liars and scam artists. Prime example, if you look on their website they have memory cards for $200!!! You can buy thee same memory cards on amazon.com for only $15. Example number two: I asked for an itemized bill and all that I received was an empty speadsheet and the total shown! Be Smart and dont lose your money.

I will give my email addres so that other people that have been scammed can rally with me to come against them and possibly get some of our money back. I'm not gonna give out my name but you can contact me at xavier_0203@yahoo.com! Let's gather together and get justice!!!!!!!!!

I had added 1 item to the cart but tried to check where they are located so I can figure out where am I ordering this but lo and behold I had gone over and over again looking for their actual address but nowhere you can find it! The good thing was I did try to check their website but it has to go through a third party...seems like they are scammers!! BEWARE of CHEAP PRICES! we are better off going to Adorama, Ritz or Amazon..Thank you so much Dave for blogging.

JUST SENT THIS IN:

My mother, placed this order with you this morning as a gift for me. She called me confused about why you would be trying to sell her a battery for this package that is clearly over priced an unnecessary. Your sales representative led her to believe that this was the only option in purchasing a battery when your website states that a batter and charger is included in this purchase.

Upon further investigation into your company I have contacted the NY State Attorney Generals office and filed a complaint against your clear bait and switch sales tactics.

After reading all of the other online stories and complaints about your fraudulent credit card and sales tactics, the credit card information that my mother used for this purchase has been canceled.

THIS ORDER SHOULD BE CANCELLED IMMEDIATELY.

Any further attempts to contact either my mother or myself regarding this matter will result in further legal complaints and/or actions filed against closeoutisland.com in both Colorado and Utah.

I ordered a Canon G11 3 months ago because it was listed at a very good price as a summer Clearance item. They tried to upsell me all kinds of stuff, but when I declined I was told that the camera was back ordered. I still have not gotten the camera and they keep advertising it as a summer special at different prices. They obviously only produce the camera for those consumers they up sell and overcharge to profit from. Do not buy from them, and turn them in to legal authorities so we can stop these scams from operating on the web.

I am looking for a Nikon D3. They are not made anymore and they are VERY rare even used as it's a top of the line Nikon pro camera. AMAZINGLY...these folks have a NEW one. There is not a new one anywhere on Earth, but they have one. SURE !!!

I ordered a lens from Closeout Island (which I thought was a deal) they pulled the old bait and switch thing with me as well, never had anything like the item in stock at all that I had ordered. So I told them that I was not interested & please cancel my order. Then, after a couple of weeks fraudulent charges appeared on my Mastercard that ties back to them and their location. These people are bad news.

My name is Angie Hindman and I like all of you got ripped off by Closeout Island. I first purchased the sport package for the T1i and then was called the next day to them saying that the person who does their web sites father had passed away and there was a typo in the price of my package BUT that they would give me a "great" deal on the same package. Original package was about $500.00. I ended up spending $998.00. When my order finally arrived which took forever even though I had payed for 2 day shipping the camera straight out of the box was giving me an error msg. When I finally did get it to work it was slower or as slow as my point and shoot. they told me I must have put the memory card in wrong and thats what was giving me the error msg. I have been emailing back and forth with these people trying to get them to replace my camera. They said they would send me the box and labels I needed. That never happened. I am also missing a big part of my order and instead of sending me the Canon lens I ordered they sent me a Sigma. After many no return emails and now the phone number does not even work I decided to just get out the warranty card take it to Best Buy and get it fixed. To my huge disappointment once again, the warranty card they sent me was not even for my camera but for the Sigma lens I didn't even want in the first place. To top ALL of this off there where 6000.00 in fraudulent charges made to the bank card that I used to purchase my camera....Hmmmmm, I do wounder after reading all ofthe other comments on here who made them??? I saved for 3 years for this camera, have very little money and no way to replace it. This Camera was supposed to beused for both my home business (I raise papillons) and to go to photography school. There has got to be something we can do? Please to any one reading all of our comments...DO NOT buy any thing from these people. I have no idea why they are not shut down already.

There is even more to this story but I tried to just get to the point so this is not a mile long.

If any one has any ideas of how we can possibly shut them down or get some of our money back please contact me privately.

Had identical experience a anymus of Sept 1. Placed my order for a canon D7 "Kit" at very reasonable price on 4/1/10. After numerous follow up calls I realized I will not receive the camera. Since the price was right, I decided to wait. Last month Costco had a suitable camera at a discount and I purchased it. Tried to call COI but their line was busy. Send Email canceling my order. Thanks for the warning. Next time will search for "feedback" on companies offering bargains.
