DigitalElect.com aka Digital Elect: Bait and Switch Alert

I just noticed a new website appearing on Google as a sponsored link:

$579 for a Nikon D5000, lens only?  That's more expensive than Amazon, which has it for $549.

Are they legit?  Digitalelect.com claims that "Digital Elect" has been around since 2000, and that their website has been around since March 2009.  Yet, other than their domain name reserved this year, there is no record of their existence.  The State of New York has no record of any corporation going by this name (check for yourself here).  Nothing in New Jersey either.   Nor is there any contact information on their website, NOT EVEN A PHONE NUMBER!  They don't even mention what state they are in for sales tax purposes.  One thing that is VERY ALARMING about these guys is the background design of their website. Those snow flakes are the EXACT same ones that soniccameras.com used prior to being driven out of business (read the horrible reviews here; they had a .82/10 rating).
Put the following search terms, from their product headings, in Google: "dv cam" gps "mini dvd/blu-ray" "camera accessories" "home theater"
It returns exactly six results, including need4digital.com and digitalliquidators.  That's a REALLY, REALLY bad sign.  Digitalliquidators.com has a .31/10 rating on resellerratings.com, while need4digital.com has a 5.91/10 score, (probably positvely skewed with fake reviews) with one purchaser describing it as the worst buying experience in his life.  Several of the headings from Digitalelect.com, including: Flashes, Projectors, GPS, Lens Accessories, Televisions, LCD, Plasma, Television Accessories, Home Theater, lead to pages that say "No Products found for selected Category."
If you've had any experiences with them, please let me know by posting a note below, or emailing me at dave.michael@rocketmail.com.
Update: A reader of this blog noted that after purchasing from Digital Elect, the order confirmation says "Crazy Camera Deals."  The contact page of CrazyCameraDeals.com list an address of 1223 Mcdonald Avenue in Brooklyn,  and a phone number of 877-244-1302, the same number as need4digital, a bait and switch website.  Read the reviews here. You can go ahead and ignore the fake positive ones.  So Digital Elect = Crazy Camera Deals = Need4Digital.  Add 'em all together and you get one BIG FRAUD.

sketchy, yes. We attempted to buy a camera from this website. The camera has not been shipped and we can not get any trackign information. No one will contact us. It's looking more and more like a scam of some sort. We are trying to cancel payment through the bank and hoping it works.

OMG..thank you a tons! Almost ordered from here, but the lack of phone number seems shady. Glad to see your posts.

They have a number now: 347-462-9302.

I ran it through a reverse directory and it is an "unpublished number" based in NYC.

Last nail in the coffin.

so i think i'm a sucker. i just bought a camera from them.

they called me for address verification, and then said i needed to pay almost 10% more for insurance. which isn't calculated on their website. i tried to ask them why it's not included on the website, and they wouldn't tell me.

i just did a seach on "directelect.com" and found this blog entry.

now im regretting my decision. is there any way i can cancel this order without being penalized?

i'm wondering, did the above anonymous commenter every receive the ordered camera?

if dave, or anyone else has advice for me it's appreciated.

you can email at root892000@yahoo.com

thanks

oh btw, when the order confirmation email says i'll be billed from "crazy camera deals" not digitalelect.com

is this allowed?

Anonymous said...

Yeesh. I found this blog post right after ordering a camera from digitalelect.com. I just canceled my order. Thanks for the info. I was feeling kind of nervous about the price, it seemed too good to be true--probably was.

Anonymous said...

ME TOO!!!
They did the same thing with the insurance with me ... they said that it wasn't calculated on the website because I'd inputted the wrong zip code (the confirmation page that I'd saved on my computer didn't have my address info - so I couldn't call them on it directly) - seeing that someone else had the same experience makes me sure that it was a scam on their part.

Bait and Switch is a perfect description of Digital Elect. Ordered a Nikon Coolpix 90 camera at a great price, but was contacted by Digital Elect and was baited and switched into spending an additional $150 for a "deluxe package" These items would have cost me far less and I would have received more if I purchased them individually. If you purchase from them, stay with the low price and do not allow them to move you into their deluxe packages.

almost bought a D-90 today! Saw this sight and said "Heh-al-naw"! Thanks for the warning.

BUYER BEWARE of Digital Elect. After making my on line order, they called me and talked me into purchasing an upgraded battery and battery charger for an additional $69.99. When I received the order the camera came with the standard battery and battery charger as verified in the manual and with Nikon on line support. When I called Digital Elect customer service, they tried to convince me that the standard battery and battery charger that comes with camera is actually an upgrade that I paid an extra $69.99 to receive. They also told me that the camera is shipped directly from Nikon,( which it is not, it is shipped from Digital Direct), with the upgraded battery and battery charger and that the manual for the upgraded version is different than the regular manual,ie the standard items listed by Nikon are really upgrades.. Their explanations were well rehearsed. WHAT A BUNCH OF HOOIE

FIGHT Back. Some things to do:
* Go to their website and go to NEXTAG rate them a 1 and REFER THEM TO Digital.COM AKA digital Elect:Bait and Switch Alert
*File a complaint with the New York State Consumer Protection Board: on line or Consumer Assistance Unit: 5 Empire State Plaza: Suite 2101: Albany, New York, 12223-1556 Fax 518-486-3936.
*Communicate with them via the internet so that you have a written record.
*Email the comnpany and describe how Digital Elect is using thirr product to scam people

I ordered the Cannon Powershot 20is from PhotoVideoSuperstore.com and they did the EXACT same thing- sent me an email telling me to call and confirm my order and when I called they tried to upsell me then told me they were tacking on more money for shipping insurance. I called the guy on it saying there was no mention of insurance on the website nor in the email he sent me to get me to call him. I canceled my order- told them their website is a scam and all the guy did was apologize with some rehearsed line. He kept telling me how he is trying to save ME money and do me a favor with the additional $$$ for insurance. I told him I'm doing HIM the favor by purchasing from his company and will take my biz somewhere else. So could this website also be attached to the previously listed ones I read about on here?? Thank God I searched for Promocodes!!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh- BTW- you can always cancel your order with sites like this without being penalized by telling them they are scamming you and that you will report them for fraudulent activity- which your bank will support and you will not be charged. They know its the truth and should comply. If not- contact your bank.

I just bought the Panasonic ZS3 from Digital Elect. They also called me after my order was placed and said that I must purchase an extended battery for $30, that the camera would only work for a short time without it. When I received the camera, I saw that the battery that was sent was the same as what comes in the box anyway...I would have received this regardless. I am currently trying to get my $30 back and am threatening to report them...we will see. I just want all of you to know to avoid this company.

"DigitalElect.com aka Digital Elect: Bait and Switch Alert"

Be really careful with these guys.
Bait and Switch Company.
The most common trick they use is the one of the camera that comes with a demo battery that does not work the good one id the one that costs extra $170.00.
Please stay away

hi my name is Henry am sorry to bother you but i, just like you, made the mistake of buying a camera from digitalelect.com i bought the camera today april 1st, a nikon D300S in which i spent $1,739 then i found this page of reviews and i almost had a heartattack the truth is that i am very nervous because i don't know what to do reading some reviews i found out that most the people have reseived the camera and that the only thing they regret is that they were robbed with the trick bout the the battery and the insurance...in other cases they cancelled the oreders but they never got their money back...my interest in contacting you is of knowing what happened with you, if you reseived the camera and/or had to pay more or if you canceled your order and they gave you your money back? please advise me becasue i don't know what to do. Thank you.

Thanks for the info which helped me combat my own human nature to save money. I was giving serious consideration to picking up a 5DMKII from one of these discount sites. I don't mind grey market, but I do mind dealing with crooks...

I ordered a Canon EOS Rebel T2i and was a bit worried so I went online and found this site. I canceled my order and went to the band to make sure that they do not allow this money to come off. I knew it sounded shady but thought I could save a buck. Though it might have come through legit, after reading all these reviews I decided to play it safe.

Thanks a lot for all your comments, I was looking for a deal , trying to save some money, it really was about 100 less than at the regular stores, thanks God and all of you I didn't buy.

So I'm glad I didn't put in my order for a Nikon D90 with the 18-105 VR Lens....does anyone recommend a different site that is legit and has a good price on the D90?

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! I have been comparing prices for DAYS now trying to figure out everything that I want and I went to google promo cades for digital elect and came across this! NO GOOD! I want a deal as much as the next person but I will certainly pay the $30.00 differnce to know that everything is ligit! Thank you all you saved my mind and my pocket!

I knew that $305 Panasonic ZS7 was way too good to be true. The phone number they have on their site as customer support is the same one for several other fraudulent sites.

I would like to send a big "thank you" to those who started this post and who added valuable personal experience and/or research results. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SAVING ME THE POTENTIAL HASSLES! You guys did amazingly great things!

I, too, just about ordered a camera (Panasonic LX3) from the suspect website www.Digitalelect.com -I, too, was actually searching for 'promo codes' and came across this informative post! After reading through it, I realize that this fishy website does nothing more than providing teasing low prices on cameras which later turn out to be demanding extra money for unnecessary items or for shipping insurance conveniently "forgot" to be calculated during check out process.

Be alert to www.Digitalelect.com if you want to save yourself some very likely troubles and headaches later on.

So glad I Googled "reviews digitalelect.com". I was about to get myself a Mother's Day present at what I thought was a great price. Not anymore. Actually, the snowflake background was odd to me given it's May!! That and they were far lower than other competitors. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this post!

Just received a Cannon digital camera from these guys and got the same phone call about upgrading the battery pack. I declined and just received my camera today and the battery is the standard battery that comes from the factory. It took a couple of weeks to receive the camera and didn't receive a tracking number until it shipped. They also charged me an additional 15.00 from the price advertised on line but after reading all the reviews I guess I'm should feel lucky.

Anonymous said...

I feel so bad after reading all these comments ... I ordered a Nikon D5000 one week ago and experienced the exact same thing like most of you. I had to call them to verify my order and they told me that I gave them the wrong zip code. After that they told me to choose between the batteries.. Unfortunatly I have no ideas about SLRs so I didnt know anything.. In the end he made me order the exclusive package and I was fine with that.
They already charged the money but after one week I didnt receive the camera. I wrote them a mail but no response.
What should I do?

Thank you for getting the word out on this scam. I too nearly fell for it, a price on an Olympus E-PL1 that was $100 lower than I'd seen it anywhere else. What nearly drew me in was their About Us section on their webpage which made them sound legit and, believe it or not, their high shipping charges which I thought was their way of making a profit.

You're now bookmarked as is resellers.com and I'll put the word out on other websites.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I was just about to purchase a Canon 7D with 28-135mm lens. Then wisdom said to search for a review of the site itself. Classic adage here: if it sounds to good to be true, guess what.

I just ordered a Nikon d3000 camera from DE.. This Monday, I got a call saying that the AMEX terminals were down and if I used another credit card my order would go out the next day, so, like a rube, I gave them another card. They told me they would upgrade my order giving me a bigger card and a heavy duty battery for only $29 more. I said go ahead, and now I'm holding my breath to see if I get a camera at all after reading all these comments.

I bougth nikon D60 and its price was 355 without lens. But they charge international insurance and very high shipping cost. Also, They contact me after 10 days from shopping day and they tried to convience me to sell battery grip and they claims nikon D60digital camera is not included battery. I had to order one battery whose brand is ZEİKSON and $129. Thus, my total cost increased $635. Wheras, I could buy Nikon D60 at e-buy at the same cost with 18-55 lens. I would like to warn all They are not honest. Dont buy anything at their website

Anonymous said...

I wish I had read this BEFORE I bought my camera. The camera price was good but they called me to "verify" my zip code and I got sucked into the upgraded battery scam. That was bad enough but I also paid way too much for an SD card that isn't compatible for taking movies with my camera. Of course, I didn't find out till AFTER I opened the package and put it in my camera. (Making it technically non-refundable.) At least, I'd have been happier to have paid too much for a card I will use. I am sick about it but will call them tomorrow to see what they will do. I'm not holding my breath on this one!

I tried to purchase a Canon T2i camera and lens from Digitalelect.com... The guy said it didn't come with a battery and tried to sell me one for $50. I declined, and then he asked me "which firmware do you want, the 2009 version or the 2010?" I thought that was odd but I said 2010. Then when he gave me the total it turned out he was CHARGING me $139 for the firmware! SI said then forget the firmware and he said the camera wouldn't work without it. They were also going to charge me over $100 for insurance! I called Canon and the rep told me that every camera ships from the factory with firmware and also that I could get the latest firmware for free any time. I called Digitalelect back and told them this and they hung up one me. BAD, REALLY BAD!

...the same spill as stated above (verify incorrect zip code, batt purchase, AMX website is down so gave a different credit card...) Too bad I didn't see this site sooner :-( Purchased a camera Monday called to cancel yesterday but item has shipped already. I was promised a tracking number to be emailed soon but 3 days later no word yet. Have to wait and see if I'll get that or the camera at all. Urrrg, frustrated!

Same as above, we found this blog post a few hours after they charged us $200 more than we thought we had ordered. They sold my wife an extra long life battery over the phone, but it does not appear on the "invoice" they emailed to her. We are going to cancel the draft on our bank and try to spread the word about the fraud. Thanks for your comments.

For anyone who reads this, don't wait to see what comes in the mail, cancel payment as soon as possible! DigitalElect.com is a fraud!

Damn! Ordered a high-end Canon video camera from DigitalElect.com and just now found this web site! I got the same scam! 1) Email from them saying I needed to contact them immediately about my order, and when I called, they needed to verify my zip code. 2) Then I was told the battery that comes with the camera is a one-time use battery that is not rechargeable and will only work for 30 minutes. Luckily, I didn't fall the this, I just figured he didn't know what he was talking about and declined the offer. But now, I am wondering if my camera will even come! I will absolutely update on this blog if it comes! Seems that many did receive the cameras, but got the battery/service plan scam. If my camera comes, I'll be happy -- and I will repost. And if it doesn't, I will also let you all know!!

Thanks for putting this blog up!!

They are a scam site.

We tried to purchase a SONY HDR-CX350V at $529 as listed on their web site and advertised all over. You can't buy one for that price, because you must buy firmware (2009 or 2010 version) which takes the price up to $710.

Don't buy from these guys.

Thanks so much for the warnings. Almost fell into the same trap but something told me to google the company first and so glad I did.

My father ordered from digital elect and ordered a camera with out consulting me I've told him to do in the past. I immediately googled the site and found this website and warned him that he would get a call. That was on the 8th. Today he gets a call about the insurance. He immediately cancelled the order. I laughed at him and told him to never buy anything without asking me 1st lol.

I read these comments, but decided at over $60 cheaper than anywhere else, I would try and order a sony POS. BE AWARE *ALL* orders must be phone verified (their website doesn't state this). So best to call them right away (they claimed they were going to call me, but it takes 48 hours). They are actually pretty responsive to email and that 347 phone number. Had the order just about completed, was ready to hang up, and the guy pulled that "demo" battery crap. They said it was a "white" box and the manufacturer ships them this way. Of course I cancelled and thanked them for wasting 3 days of my time.
BTW, I also told them to google their name, there's tons of bad stories and they said they would look into it...

As a technology buyer for a Fortune 500 company, I buy millions of dollars in electronics every year. There is one simple rule: ALMOST EVERYONE, SELLS ALMOST EVERYTHING, FOR ALMOST THE SAME PRICE. If a website is selling a camera for 20% less than everyone else, you know it can't be true. Somehow, someway, you will pay more for less. Call and talk to them and ask about Grey Market cameras and if the warranty is honored by the manfacturer or a 3rd party. When they avoid your questions, you will have your answer.

Burned Victim said...

Well, thanks for having this up but I wish I found it before buying my camera from these scam artists.
When I see "free shipping" it should mean PRECISELY that -- not some last second scam put on you that they also need to charge an additional 9% for insurance as stated on the tiny print of their policy page. I was also called by phone and they tried to upsell me for a bunch of stuff I didn't need ("I noticed that you forgot to order a memory card or rechargeable batteries...") and also they tried pulling an extra "deal" on me for an additional $10, and I got nothing more than their empty words in the delivery box. In the end I paid more than $80 additional than what their website quoted me, or over $55 what a reputable dealer like B&H charged.
I was also told my credit card statement would be listed as 'Crazy Camera Deals' but in fact something else entirely was listed.
I trusted Nextag since they were highly rated there. But every complaint they get about DE they give the store a chance to reply (always like 'we were honest, please call our customer service line') and the store has the last word.
These bait-and-switch tactics are totally misleading and they appear to have several false fronts and store names. I warn everyone who reads this to stay away from DigitalElect.com, and you check the Policy page of that online store to see if they have some BS line like they will also add on their own 'insurance cost'.
Good places like B&H or Amazon are honest about "Free Shipping".

I second what everyone else has said. I'm very glad I decided to pay attention to my second thoughts and checked out this site before making my last few clicks for an amazingly low-priced camera.

My second thoughts started when I could find no phone number to directly contact the sales department. Then I saw that you can't ascertain shipping costs before giving them credit-card info.

There's a real lesson in this for me: "If it's too good to be true..." Seems like I have to learn that over and over.

The business about Nextag was very helpful too. I had no idea merchants could effectively neutralize complaints.

Wow! I'm not the only one to experience the scam of this company. Buyer Beware and horrible customer service on top of it.
I too ordered a camera, received an email asking me to call them and I did. In that phone call they stated I ordered 2 cameras (which I didn't, but they would correct), the item I ordered is not in stock and surely I must have gone to their website 3rd party, told me that the camera only comes with a demo battery and that is why I received a great price, and that I'm required to pay insurance on the camera. My response:
1) I only ordered one camera - which they would correct. Told me I must have a slow computer that did that.
2) Their website still shows the out of stock item (so I know I wasn't making it up)
3) The battery would not be included, which is odd to me. Then that is not truly a deal is it, just buy it from the store.
4) When I checked out on the website it gave me a total and did not mention insurance. They claim it does (which is does if you look for it). This went round and round.
I asked for a manager. That manager wouldn't let me talk and just pointed fingers that I'm wrong and they are doing everything right. In return I told him his voice was irritating. Wow! My mistake, after that he told me that I'm disgusting and a low life and pretty much went on and on and wouldn't let me even get a word in edge wise. Then in turn he hung up on me!!! I called back and the first thing out of his mouth..."are you going to apologize?". Ummm... ya, but are you? He twisted my words around and told me I said he was disgusting (which let's get the facts straight sir, I just said his voice was irritating!)...still not letting me talk. I'm the customer, right? I consider myself a pretty reasonable and fair person, but this company pushed the limits! My boyfriend came to the rescue and again, the guy did the same thing. Even when asked for the owner's name, the customer service manager claimed he is the owner. Steer clear!!!! Horrible customer service and they do NOT represent themselves well on the phone or on the website. My belief - As a company, they should treat customers well and realize that we are the ones that pay for a product. Needless to say, they will not be receiving money or business from us. Hopefully they will not receive business from others. If so, just be cautious and alert!

Just be cautious and alert if you do use them!

Beware those guys!! I also bit the bait of a very good price for a Rebel T1i. After I placed the order somebody called me to confirm it and then went to this story of the batteries and special packages and delivery...

It went from $435 to $659.99 !!!

I cancelled my order but they had already charged me with the amount. They promise they will roll it back in 48 hours. I just hope they won't trick me any other way. I'll be keeping an eye on my account every single day for the next days.

Stay away from them: they will ripo you off!!

THEY ARE A FRAUD!! I ordered a cannon camera and they sent an email to call and confirm the order 2 days later. I called and was upsold on a warranty and tried to be on batteries. It took 7 business days before I finally called and cancelled my order. I was told it was just sent out but when I mentioned I have filed a claim with MC and UPS they quickly sent an email saying I would be refunded!! LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS THEY ARE SCAMMERS!!

Like several people already mentioned, this seller scams you out of money, big time! I ordered a Sony TX5 camera. Order went through fine, no problems. Figured I'm getting a pretty decent deal for $300 even though I could get the camera on Amazon for a little more (which I should've done if I knew). Get a call 5 days later from a DigitalElect rep to verify my credit card info - all good, no problems there. Then in the end of the convo I find out that my camera actually ships with a "demo" battery and that a normal battery is an extra $50. I asked why's that. Then I am told that the new models always ship without the battery. Found it kind of odd, but had no choice but to get their awesome "discount package" just for an extra $50 for a battery and charger - Amazing!

I get really curious about this so I call Sony up and find out that in fact they do NOT ship any of their cameras without the battery and that there is only one high cap. battery that always comes in the package WITH all their cameras. Then checked some more info online from othe retailers. All come with the standard NP-BN1 battery, which I had to pay an extra $50 for. Best part about it is that it just costs $15 to get a replacement NP-BN1 online from pretty much any retailer. I won't even start going into other stuff e.g. about how my camera has a dead pixel on the LCD (which is by far not my biggest concern at the moment). I shop online all the time. This is by far the worst experience I EVER had. Best part about it all - don't bother sending emails - you never get a reply back anyways. Getting forwarded to a manager goes to an answering machine.

If I don't get the $50 I was scammed off back, I'll probably have to send the camera back and expect a full refund, or if not, report it as fraud on my Visa.

I guess they try offset the negative reviews online by making it sound like it was just a misunderstanding and give the illusion that they wold be "happy to resolve the issue"

THIS COMPANY MAKES PROFIT BY SCAMMING YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY

BUYER BEWARE!!

I just had a strange experience with DigitalElect.com; I ordered a Panasonic FZ40 for $255.00 and then found this site. I immediately sent them the following email:

To whom it may concern;

"I just ordered a camera from you about twenty minutes ago and want the order canceled. The order confirmation # is 31033833 per the email you sent me.

Your ordering process does not reveal things that only come to sight after you have obtained my credit card information. I find this to be at best shady

and found many complaints about your business on line. I will also call the customer service department to obtain the required cancellation number that I now

see can not be obtained via email. I can't believe that you do business this way. This line in particular from your email is completely unacceptable:

"Please retain this 9 digit cancellation # as it is your only proof that your order was canceled.

**Once an order has shipped, it CANNOT be canceled."

So you refuse to give proof of cancellation other than some one speaking over the phone? What legitimate business handles any activities this way?

Thanks so much for this bad experience. SiteJabber.com certainly has you people nailed."

This morning I called them and they told me the order had already been cancelled as they use caller ID. The guy would not give me his name, gave me a cxl # and then told me it was emailed to me last night. I checked my email and found an email from them. The strange thing is that unless I've lost my mind I know I read under their policies on the site that cxls would only be handled on the phone and that no email would be sent to handle it.
This morning the site policies seem to be missing the clause covering cxls altogether. Isn't that interesting? Here is the email from them:
"We Thank you for shopping at DigitalElect.com for all your Digital Equipment.

As per your request your order has been CANCELED and your credit card has not been charged nor will be charged.
Your cancelation # is now C31033833"

Even though I have this cxl confirmation I will have to worry because they now have my credit card info. I am going call it in stolen so I don't have to spend anymore time with these people.
Thanks for all of the time you guys spent here. We must join together to out this kind of business practice.

I ALMOST just fell into this same scam it looks like. SO thankful to have found this before putting out my grand on a canon 60D...If this company is a scam and this many people have run into issues with them, shouldn't their company be investigated or put on hold or something in order to avoid more people getting scammed out of their money?

Stay away from this company. I thought I was saving some money but then after receiving the Order Confirmation I was terrified and was worried all weekend. It does not detail what item was ordered and the price of the order. Then I read some of these reviews and I was even more worried. I phoned in at my nearest opportunity and cancelled. I am hoping I will have no further troubles.

DANGIT!
I ordered a Canon T2i from these guys on Friday, then was upsold today and ended up paying $140 more dollars than originally quoted because i was told the "demo battery" would not last longer than a few minutes. Foolish me. I called my credit card company tonight to get help, but they said it has already been approved, but not posted to my account and that i must call and cancel with digitalelect, or go through an appeals process with my CC company. What a pain. I emailed the company tonight to attempt to cancel my order, and will call again in the morning.

I tried to get a 550d that was very cheap. Got the usual call like everyone else.
First they tried the battery thing. When I said I already had a few (ebay, 2 for $10), that threw the pitch for a loop. It took a few secs for him to come up with a new one.
Firmware! You need to choose 2009 for $70 at 2 Fps or 2010 for $120 at 3.7fps. Hmmm. the camera is a new model for 2010. How is there a 2009 firmware for a model that didn't exist yet?
Canceled right there and watching my bill closely. Funny enough, he didn't sound surprised I wanted to cancel. Must get it often.

Stay clear.

I ordered a Sony cybershot TX1 camera on Wednesday and paid with my AMEX card. I was sent a confirmation email and thought nothing more of it all until I received an email today asking me to call the company to verify my payment details. I was connected to a person by the name of David and he told me that the company does not accept AMEX for US Domestic orders. He told me there had been a mistake made and that my order shouldn't have been processed. He then asked me for a Visa or Mastercard and when I told him I didn't have one, he suggested I ask a friend or relative if I can use theirs! I calmly and polity told him that this wasn't an option at which point he flew off the handle at me, yelling at me and telling me not to take my aggression out on him. When I tried to explain that I wasn't taking any aggression out but merely confused as to how I could have run the order, received confirmation and been told I was due to receive my camera in a few days but now being told I needed to give a new card, he exploded once again at me, told me my order was canceled and slammed the phone down on me!
When I got home I combed the company's website looking for the policy in which it states that AMEX can only be used on international orders and I found NOTHING. I then attempted to run a new order with my AMEX again and it was accepted!. I called AMEX IMMEDIATELY, reported the company and told them to look out for any charges close to what I was being billed. I also called DAVID back at Digital Elect and told him to cancel my orders. He assured me they had been canceled and told me to put a "C" in front of my order number as this would now become my cancellation order. He also said he'd email me however I've not received anything from them as yet.
I can only hope the me reporting the SCAM to AMEX will keep me safe and that strange and exotic charged won't show up on my card in months to come.
These guys are a joke and should be shut down. I would love to go back and finally have the chance to take my REAL aggression out on David!

Digital Elect sells you supposed "upgrades" that are standard items and then charges WELL above where their true value is. I bought a Nikon d3100 that was supposed to be $569.00 and was sold on "extras" that I later found out were standard on all Nikon d3100 cameras (the battery and battery charger they sold me were included and not really upgrades) and the high speed memory card was nothing special and I wound up getting charged $400 for $40 of extras after much research. Customer service (maybe the owner) is surly and I was put on hold for several minutes when I chose Customer Service. When someone answered they said I had dialed another department and made me wait several more minutes for Customer Service. They would not do the right thing and let me keep the camera for the price advertised. And I found it $10 less at another retailer online and was told they'd match other prices. But they insisted that I send it back and wanted me to pay restocking fees at first until I cancelled payment with my credit card.

Terrible company
All they do is lie to try to make the sale or make another sale.
I placed my order on December 3rd. I called to confirm my item was in stock. I made it very clear that I needed my item by the 14th. They said that it would take 2-3 days to process and 5-8 days to ship for an average of 10 days and that while it might be close it would arrive on time.
On the 5th I called again and asked if my order had been processed, they said it had and it would ship that day.
On the 7th I called again and asked if my order would ship. They said it would ship that day.
On the 8th I called and asked if I could cancel my order and was told it had shipped already but there was no tracking code.
Late on the 13th now I got an email informing me that my order had shipped. Only now, 10 full days after I placed the order has it finally gotten out of their warehouse. That is pretty bad for something that was supposedly in stock and was promised to have been shipped twice 7 and 8 days ago.

Each time I called the company assured me that everything was fine and that things would arrive on time. They also tried various scams to sell me overpriced batteries or memory cards.

Much of this companies public relations excuses hinge on it being a warehouse seller. What about being in the warehouse direct business involves lying?

I will never EVER use this company again. All they do is lie.

What alerted me about a possible scam is that they are selling this camera on $245 (about 10% less than others, nothing strange)but the list price was showing $599!! when everybody on the web even the official list price by Sony have it for $350 (now discounted for $280).
Thanks again and stay out this company!

Ordered a camera from these guys. I got the same "give us a call to confirm your order." I called them to confirm and they began to sell me an "upgraded battery for long life" and "quick charger" for faster charging. About $140 in upgrades. At that price, I should have gone to Canon direct or even BESTBUY for a better return policy and a piece of mind. I did receive my camera. It looks like a standard battery and wall charger. I am going to call Canon and ask them if these two upgraded options exist. I have a feeling that they do not. I will let you know.

Jerry said...

What other customers said about this outfit are true, they are very dishonest. I WOULD NEVER EVER DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN. I ordered a Canon camera, thinking getting it at a great price, but only was notified by e-mail that I need to call back to "verify" my order. During the phone conversation, I was told the camera came only with a single-use demo battery and I need to purchase a rechargeable one. I told them their online spec says it comes with battery pack and other necessary accessories, and I fully expect the camera be at its full functionalities right out of the factory box. If this is not the case, they can cancel my order. The man at the other end, without hesitation, said that your order is cancelled. Obivously, selling that camera at the listed price does not make sense to them, and they would either have to make a significant profit on selling other add-ons or not sell it at all.
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!!!

Bummer, just ordered a digital SLR from them. Read the reviews/complaints, went in hopeful but cautious. 4 business days went by (they said they ship within 2-3) and I contacted them to check on my order. Got an automated e-mail back saying "call to verify your order."

Here's how the call went:
- on hold for 20 min

- tried to upsell me on a lens kit (I bought body only, no big deal)

- tried to upsell me on a battery as the included one only lasted 20 minutes

- tried to upsell me on a rechargeable battery as the included one was one-time-use (seemed to contradict the prior upsell)

- Added $40 to my total price for insurance. I worked for one of the top 2 global delivery companies for 5 years... NO SHIPPER charges 10% for insurance on a sub-$500 item.

- I cancelled my order.

Tried to give them a bad rating on Nextag, but it looks like they ran out of funds and all their ads are not currently being shown.

This is the worst internet company that I have EVER dealt with! I ordered a Canon camera. I got, what I now know from other posts, is the standard email that said I needed to call them. They said that I accidentally ordered two cameras (which I know I did not!) and, by the way, did I want a real rechargable battery not the 20 min one-time use battery. Also, did I want a memory card since it didn't come with one of those either. I was told that there was a 30 day price match guarantee so if I found these accessories at a cheaper price then they would refund the difference. That is the ONLY reason I agreed to the "package" that they were offering. I have since found the items much cheaper. I called them and wanted to return just the accessories and keep the originally ordered camera. No deal. I was told I had to return the whole "package" at my expense, pay a restocking fee at least 15% then reorder the camera and pay more shipping and insurance. I then said that I wanted them to honor the 30-day price match guarantee. I was told that they didn't have a guarantee. At which point I started to lose my cool. The customer service rep was rude and talked to me like I was stupid, which I was because I fell for this scam. I was told to send then the links for the cheaper prices. I've sent them twice with no response. I now consider myself officially blown off by them. Please do not do business with these scammers!!! In the old days they would have been strung up from the highest tree next to the horse thieves and cattle rustlers.

The New York Attorney General's office went after these type of electronics resellers. Turns out that once they are outed for their business practices, or shut down by the AG's office, they spring up again under a different name as some folks here have noted. The article I read said that several of them are owned by the same families i.e, cousins, brother or sister in-laws, etc. They have been pulling this crap for a long time but everytime a weed like one of them is pulled, more crop up to take their place. It really is buyer beware. Visiting a site like resellersratings.com is the best defense.

Someone asked where to go for a decent price and good policies. My experience: check for the best price on B&H, JR Photo and Amazon. There have been very few occasions where others had a better deal, and then mostly legit brick and mortar retailers with specials.
Between Amazon and these guys there's usually less then 10% difference but Amazon shipping is always free (and quick!) and they have a great return policy. The same goes for B&H. Shipping from them is even quicker!
So in the end, if there even is a difference, it is at most a few bucks (a fraction of the price), which is a great price to pay for peace of mind...

Happy shopping,
Albert.

I too am a victim of the bait and switch scam. I ordered a Canon camera with the same item number that other websites had listed for what I thought was a good price. I got a call from them a couple days later wondering why I had ordered two cameras. While on the line the guy told me the camera that I ordered came with a 20 minute battery and I should upgrade to a package price that they had with a 4 hour battery, rapid charger, and full one year warranty for $128 more. Not knowing any better I agreed. I later felt odd about it and checked with Canon. They said that there is only one battery that they ship with the camera and it comes with the external charger. I have since confronted them about this only to get no response. Do not buy from these guys. Also Doing business as Crazy Camera Deals.

There are a lot of these companies!!! All based in New York, and they all do the same exact thing: SCAM people! Another site to watch out for is certifieddigital.com They are def NOT certified. They did the same thing, I placed an order, I was sent an email stating they tried to contact me on my cell (no missed call) and had me call them. They said there wanted to ship the camera to the billing address because its too confusing. (Then why have the option???) The guy tried to sell me a memory card for twice the price you can get it for an amazon. THEN he tacked on an insurance fee that i was never told about!!! Oh there's so much more!!! I ended up cancelling my order, that wasn't coming anyway.

I ordered a camera last week and didn't receive any tracking number, receipt or anything.. then yesterday my second thoughts were coming to my head again and something just didn't seam right. I decided to do further research on the website and found this, and read all of these comments and immediately freaked out. I wrote them an e-mail then called them this morning at 10:28. The service department picked my call up and I was directed to someone very quickly (which I appreciated) then proceeded to give him my order number where he simply said "No problem, your order has been canceled for you"... I was honestly SO relieved that it was handled that simply (knock on wood) but I wanted to let all the other customers that got sucked into this gimmick that my experience wasn't as horrid as many of the others on here- so have some hope!

In addition, I never received a call in which DE was trying to hassle me into some kind of money scam, or to order a more "reliable battery pack"... so I can't say I experienced that part of this scam, but with all the negative feed back on this blog- I did NOT want to have to experience it!

Good luck to everyone!

On 1 June 2011, I ordered two Nikon Coolpix L110's in Red @ $155 each from DigitalElect.com (Corporate name - Crazy Camera Deals).

I received a call the afternoon of 7 June to say that the red ones are not available (even though the website STILL says they are in stock!) - - so I must settle for the black ones.

Next I am told I must pay $66.50 EXTRA for the firmware for each camera in order to make them useable. That is like selling a car and then charging extra for the steering wheel in order to drive it!! No one else in the industry does that - Firmware is factory-installed and is included in the price of the item (I am an electronics technician, specializing in camcorders, digital cameras, and high-end audio). Firmware is usually pre-loaded into the microprocessor before it is mounted on the circuit board (in the L110, the firmware version is 1.3). As a factory authorized warranty technician, I have replaced many microprocessors due to corrupt data in the firmware, and I have also loaded upgrade firmware into many units (all covered by the manufacturer's warranty!!).

At the very least, if they are going to charge extra for the firmware, they should say so on the camera's website page (just as they inform buyers that the memory card is not supplied by the manufacturer). They do not mention it until a week later with a phone call. They say if I do not purchase the firmware, the cameras will not work.

Their standard shipping policy states 1 or 2 business days for processing - they took 12 days over two weekends (I placed the order on June1 - they shipped on June 16). Total processing time turned out to be half a month! The package finally arrived on 20 June. The cameras contained standard FACTORY INSTALLED firmware - - the extra charge was a scam.

On June 28, 2011 I ordered a camera from a clone site (www.instockdigital.com) which came up with the best price in nextag. I received no email confirmation of the order and next day I called to check the order status. The person who answered the phone told me all was ok except I had forgotten to order a battery. That took me by surprise because I had researched that camera for a long time and knew it came standard with a battery pack and charger. The person said that wasn't true and offered two battery options: one for $29 and one for $49. I said no and he then told me he would cancel the order and if I changed my mind I could call back and have the order replaced. Went online and found this blog - so I guess I am not the only one who had to deal with them. What surprises me though is that they continue to thrive two years after this blog was started. Aren't people like this supposed to be in jail? Perhaps if everyone who had a bad experience with them would report it at IC3 it might speed up the transition from Brooklyn to the nearest prison.

Well, I fell for the scam, and paid for the memory card and extra upgrade. BUT, the camera was a huge hhit for our vacation. The pictures and videos we caught were amazing. But after just one battery charge the whole camera is frozen. I've been attempting to contact Digital Elect (also attempting to download any of their easy return forms) and have had no luck. I paid more for the camera than if I had gone to Best Buy, but it did come within two days and in time for vacation and the pictures are worth it. Just loved the camera so much and wish it worked. After reading all the comments, and even feeling bittersweet about my dealings with DE, I would recommend to anyone to NOT BUY FROM THEM.

THE DIGITALELECT.COM WEBSITE NOW SAYS THEY ARE NOT TAKING IN ANY MORE ORDERS!!

Perhaps enough publicity and sunshine on these crooks have made them close their doors - hopefully forever.
A few years in jail for all their lies and deceit are surely deserved for them. The question is, are they just going to re-open under a new name? Please keep this page intact so people can refer to it in case they do!!

Now called Certified Digital (certifieddigital.com), among other names. They did reluctantly tell me that all the good deals you see online are out of stock and will not be shipped for 3-4 weeks (though online, they are "in stock and available for rush shipping"). When they realized I was aware of how their operation works, they got very rude and unpleasant, and eventually hung up on me. They are clearly in business to prey on the uninformed consumer. Beware! I've had a very pleasant experience with Cameta Camera(Cametacamera.com). They're a real brick and mortar business. If you want a great deal, check out their manufacture refurbished models which they warranty for a full year.

BOUGHT A NIKON D3100 AND RECEIVED EVERYTHING BUT GOT CHARGED FOR AN UPGRADED BATTERY WHICH I DOUBT IS UPGRADED AND TOLD I WOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING, WRONG! GOT CHARGED FOR THAT TOO. FILLED A COMPLAINT WITH NYC BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WHO HAD NO LUCK RESOLVING ANYTHING. ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY. STILL WAITING ON THAT. TODAY RECEIVED A RETURN SHIPPING LABEL FROM UPS FOR THE CAMERA. NO CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING THIS AND NO IDEA WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO DO. NOT SHIPPING IT BACK TO THOSE A-HOLES AS THE CAMERA SEEMS TO WORK FINE.
